Mitchell Signs NERNA's Family-First Candidate Pledge

I am honored to have signed the Family-First Candidate Pledge, a comprehensive commitment that measures leadership by its direct impact on families and communities.

This pledge aligns perfectly with my core values and dedication to serving the residents of TX-17 with integrity, compassion, and unwavering advocacy.

The Family-First Candidate Pledge encompasses five critical areas that are essential to building stronger, more resilient communities:

  • Protecting families from displacement through affordable housing initiatives and property tax relief
  • Strengthening family economic security by promoting good jobs, fair wages, and supporting local businesses
  • Investing in our youth and future generations through expanded programs, education, and mentorship opportunities
  • Promoting community-based safety measures that support families rather than harm them, including mental health resources and justice reform
  • Sharing power with communities by listening to residents, establishing neighborhood councils, and ensuring participatory decision-making

I call upon my fellow candidates in TX-17 to follow this leadership example and sign the Family-First Candidate Pledge. Our communities deserve representatives who are willing to make concrete commitments to family well-being and community prosperity. Leadership isn't measured by rhetoric—it's measured by results and positive impact on the families we serve.

I am deeply grateful to the North East Riverside Neighborhood Association (NERNA) for their invitation to participate in their Black History Month Candidates and Voters Listening Session on Thursday, February 12th, at the East Waco Library, located at 901 Elm St., Waco, TX 76704. NERNA's mission "to preserve our neighbors' quality of life" and their vision of "a supportive, livable, walkable, enjoyable and sustainable neighborhood" exemplifies the collaborative community engagement that is essential for meaningful change.

This listening session represents a vital opportunity to engage directly with historically underserved communities and address the real challenges they face daily. I am committed to listening to the concerns of our neighbors and working in collaborative and inclusive ways to develop solutions that work for every family—solutions that help lift families up and create pathways to prosperity.

The residents of Waco's North East Riverside Neighborhood Association and communities across TX-17 deserve a representative who shows up, who listens, and who will fight tirelessly for them in Congress. This means taking a strong stand against the current administration's destructive policies, including:

  • Combatting the assault on voting rights that threatens the fundamental democratic participation of our communities
  • Opposing the dismantling of critical social safety net programs that families depend on for basic needs and stability
  • Defending federal departments and programs that protect Civil Rights and ensure equal opportunity for all Americans

Together, we can build the supportive, livable, and sustainable neighborhoods that NERNA envisions and that every family deserves. I look forward to this important dialogue with the community and to continuing the collaborative work necessary to create meaningful, lasting change for TX-17.

Our families are counting on us. Our communities are counting on us. The time for action is now.
