Rents are skyrocketing, wages aren’t keeping up, and affordable housing is out of reach for millions—leaving too many on the brink of eviction or homelessness. This is not just an economic issue; it is a fundamental matter of dignity, health, and justice.

J. Gordon Mitchell believes we must treat housing as a basic human right, not a commodity reserved for the privileged few. No child should have to worry about where they’ll sleep at night, and no family should be forced out of their community because they can’t afford rising rents.

J. Gordon Mitchell’s plan for housing justice includes:

• Supporting national rent stabilization policies to prevent excessive rent hikes and keep families in their homes, while also providing support for small landlords and local communities.
• Significantly increasing federal investment in public and affordable housing, including expanding the supply of quality, energy-efficient units and repairing aging public housing.
• Expanding rental assistance programs like Section 8, making it easier for families to find and keep safe, affordable homes.
• Enacting strong protections for tenants and families facing displacement, including just-cause eviction laws, legal assistance for renters, and emergency support for those at risk of homelessness.
• Prioritizing the needs of vulnerable populations, such as seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, and those experiencing chronic homelessness, ensuring they have access to permanent, supportive housing.
• Encouraging community-driven development, so that new housing investments reflect the needs and voices of local residents and prevent displacement through gentrification.
• Cracking down on predatory landlords and corporate real estate investors who exploit loopholes, neglect repairs, or push out long-time tenants for profit.
• Promoting homeownership opportunities for working families through down payment assistance, fair mortgage lending practices, and support for first-time buyers.
